What will a furnace replacement cost?

No price is on this page yet: we would rather show dated prices than a range with no date. Below is what moves the cost of a job, and the rebate terms that can come off it.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace in San Mateo?

We haven't put a price on this page yet, and we won't put up a range with no date on it. When a price goes here, it will carry the month it was quoted and what it includes.

Until then, this page covers what moves the cost of a furnace replacement, and the rebate terms that can come off it.

What changes the price of a replacement?

Homes with the same furnace can end up with different totals, because the job around the furnace is different:

  • The equipment: the size and type of system, and whether it is a like-for-like swap or a change, such as a gas furnace to a heat pump.
  • The ducts: when an air handler, an outdoor unit, a packaged system or a coil is replaced, the state requires the connected ducts to be sealed by the installer and verified by an independent ECC-Rater, so the state of your ducts adds or saves work.
  • The permit: each city has its own steps, and some ask for plans or a site plan.
  • The site: where the equipment sits and how easy it is to reach.

Can a rebate bring the cost down?

Yes, for a fully electric heat pump. For San Mateo homes, Peninsula Clean Energy's current terms pay $1,500 per heat pump condensing unit, or packaged unit, that replaces a gas heater or furnace, with a limit per electric account.

That rebate is for heat pumps, so it does not come off a new gas furnace.

What about an AC repair visit or a tune-up?

Those will get dated prices here too, once we have them. Until then, call and describe what the system is doing.
