A job in Belmont
A Mitsubishi heat pump outside, its air handler in the garage.
Photographed one evening in Belmont, minutes apart: the outdoor unit on its pad by the house, then the air handler on its stand beside the water heater.
Both halves, photo by photo
Outside, then in: both ends of the system
A ducted heat pump comes in halves: the unit outside that moves heat, and the air handler inside that pushes air through the ducts. These photos show both.

How we know it's a heat pump
Read the label on the outdoor unit: SMART MULTI. Mitsubishi Electric sells that outdoor line as heat pumps and hyper-heating heat pumps, so this one system both heats the house and cools it.
The air handler sits on an insulated stand rather than on the bare floor, and the duct leaving its top is wrapped in foil-faced insulation all the way up into the rafters.

Belmont's placement rule and the county's rebate are where they stand now, which is not where they stood on the day of these photos.

Where the outdoor unit can go
Belmont requires compressors on a residential lot to sit outside the side setback, for fire access and to limit noise for the neighbors.

Fully electric only
That rebate covers any fully electric heat pump, ducted or ductless. A dual-fuel system with gas backup heat doesn't qualify.
