Troubleshooting a central AC

The AC is running. The air coming out is warm.

A few checks need no tools and no ladder. If they don't bring the cold back, the cause is inside the system, and that part is ours.

Warm air from the vents: check, understand, then stop

Work down this page in order. The gauge on the right shows where you are: blue is safe for you to check, red is where you turn the system off and call.

Safe to check yourself

Check these first

These come from Carrier's own advice to owners. Tick each one off as you go.

Worth a visit from us

What it usually means

When the checks pass and the air is still warm, it is usually one of these.

  • Low refrigerant, which means a leak

Refrigerant runs in a closed loop and isn't used up. When a leak lowers the level, the system can't absorb the heat from your house, and the vents blow warm.

What we do: We find the leak and fix it before we recharge, so you aren't paying for the same refill next summer.

  • An electrical part, or the compressor

Electrical faults and a failed compressor can both stop the cooling while the indoor fan keeps blowing, which is exactly what warm air from the vents feels like.

What we do: We test the electrical parts first: Carrier names contactors and capacitors among the parts that can keep a compressor from starting. A failed compressor is a bigger conversation about repair or replacement.

Stop, and call

When to stop and call

  • It's still warm after the checks

Turn the AC off. Carrier warns that running a system that isn't cooling can damage the compressor.

  • It looks like a leak or an electrical fault

Refrigerant leaks and electrical or compressor faults need a technician with gauges and a meter. Call us, or book a visit, and tell us what you've already checked.
