HVAC in Gilroy, California

How cold does Gilroy get for a heat pump?

Colder than San Jose: the Energy Code's design data put Gilroy's winter extreme lower, and a heat pump here is sized for that. Plus Gilroy's permits, inspections, and what the Air District rules don't do.

  1. Climate

Why does Gilroy's cold matter for a heat pump?

The Energy Code's design tables give each town a heating winter median of extremes, and Gilroy's sits below San Jose's. A heat pump is sized against that number.

Size it right and the backup strip heat stays off. Silicon Valley Clean Energy's guidance: in our climate, auxiliary heat should be avoided by properly air-sealing conditioned spaces and sizing HVAC systems and any needed ductwork appropriately.

  2. Permit

Does furnace work need a permit in Gilroy?

Yes. Gilroy requires a permit for repairs and extensions to mechanical systems, furnace replacements included, applied for through its GO Permit portal.

  3. Inspection

    How soon can Gilroy inspect?

The city is 72 hours out for all appointments, and it can charge a reinspection fee for a cancellation on the day itself or a missed inspection.

The permit stays on site throughout the work, with the city-approved plans stamped JOB COPY at each inspection.

  4. Air District

Is my gas furnace now illegal in Gilroy?

No. As Gilroy puts it, the Air District's rules focus only on new equipment and do not outlaw existing equipment or prohibit repairs.

The Air District says the same: the new requirements apply only upon burn out of one's current equipment.

  5. Rebate

Is there a heat pump rebate in Gilroy?

Yes: Gilroy is a Silicon Valley Clean Energy member community. Apply before the heat pump goes in, and plan to remove the old gas appliance, as dual fuel sources void qualification.
